šŸšØ Everyone's talking about...

TikTok hasn't had the best week, it's fair to say. The Financial Times reported on trouble at the platform's London office, where a team has been working on live shopping feature TikTok Shop:

Joshua Ma, a senior executive at Chinaā€™s ByteDance ā€” owner of the viral video app ā€” and the head of ecommerce at TikTok Europe, outraged London-based staff at a dinner this year when he said that, as a ā€œcapitalistā€, he ā€œdidnā€™t believeā€ companies should offer maternity leave.

Yikes. The report also said at least 20 members of the team have left and more are on the verge of quitting, with two having been paid settlements relating to working conditions.

Hours after the FT's report, Ma was said to be taking some time off and stepping back from his leadership of the UK ecommerce team. The report had clearly caused problems inside the company, with one employee reportedly suggesting words related to the incident (like "Financial Times" and "maternity") be censored from the comments of TikTok Shop livestreams. Wisely, that wasn't implemented.

Elsewhere, parent company ByteDance "has seen its valuation drop by US$100 billion over the past year to about US$300 billion, according to sources and published deal offers," according to the South China Morning Post. Increased regulation and competition in China are said to be the main factors here. But TikTok's incredible success in the West can probably only be maintained in the long run if it has a working culture that makes staff want to stick around.

Oh, and TikTok has raised eyebrows with a new privacy policy that seems to be granting itself a stronger legal basis for tracking users to target ads in Europe. This hasn't got much media attention yet, but I suspect it will be tested in court sooner rather than later, stirring up yet more trouble.

Yes, I'm sorry to say this saga is still ongoing. Shortly after Musk's bid to buy Twitter passed antitrust review, the billionaire seemed to make his most explicit attempt to get out of the now massively overpriced deal.

He asserted his right not to buy the company over the ongoing dispute about the number of bots and fake accounts on the platform. The same day, the Texas attorney general seemed to back Musk up with the announcement of an investigation into whether Twitter was giving a misleading impression of the number of bots on its platform.

Texas is likely only interested in this because Musk is based in the state and recently pledged his allegiance to the Republican party. But it didn't matter much because soon afterwards Twitter called his bluff and granted Musk access to the real-time 'firehose' of tweets to let him run his own investigation. Let's see how he fares, or whether he comes up with another excuse.

Meanwhile, the deal has spawned another shareholder lawsuit and we found out that Meta's next chief operating officer is an investor in a little-known fund backing Musk's bid.

Whatever comes of the deal (it still feels like it could go either way), it seems to have put a spring in Twitter's step when it comes to growth targets. And if the deal doesn't get stopped by shenanigans, it could go to a shareholder vote as soon as late July or early August. No matter what you think of Musk, it'll be a relief just to have an end to this constant uncertainty and back-and-forth drama.

We heard a few weeks ago that Meta's hardware division was scaling back its ambitions, and now we're starting to see the impact.

Portal started off as a wild idea: 'let Facebook (right after the Cambridge Analytica scandal, no less) have a camera in your house!' But the company ended up selling loads of them during the pandemic as housebound grandparents longed to see their grandkids.

But it seems the Portal boom was short-lived. Given Google and Amazon offer far more fully-featured connected screens that can do much more than calls, that's perhaps not a surprise. The technology will be re-jigged to appeal to businesses, but it's not clear exactly how.

And that's not the only hardware Meta is reining in. Its plans for launching AR glasses have been reportedly pushed back with the first version planned to only go to developers. Work on a smartwatch with two cameras is said to have ceased, although other wrist-based tech is apparently still in development.

šŸ‘€ Long read of the week

So, how harmful is social media? This long-read underlines just how unclear the answer to that question remains.
