Hello, geeks!
🎶 “It’s coming home, It’s coming home…”
Sorry. As an England fan, I’m getting carried away following our Euro 2024 semi-final win earlier this week. 🏴 ⚽️
Before we get into this week’s Geekout…
TikTok just added an amazing FREE tool to research creators ✨
It's shocking this has only just been added! » Check it out « 😯
__________
It’s been a busy week for the big social media platforms this week.
No BIG news headlines. BUT a lot of very interesting developments and hot new features spotted in the wild.
I’ve captured and listed them ALL below. We’ll get into that in a moment.
Here are a few less serious, fun things I spotted in my feeds in the past seven days:
Threads has a HOT new piece of swag users are desperate to get their hands on. Who do I need to flirt with at Instagram to get me one of these, Mosseri? 🔥 Check it out here.
Elon Musk is throwing shade at Mark Zuckerberg (again). Seriously Zuck, get the dude in that MMA ring and end this. Please! 🥊
Meanwhile, Zuck bragged that he's the most world’s most well-known millennial. He might just be right. ⭐️
I think we need a new emoji to use when mentioning AI. The ✨ and 🤖 is all we got. Suggestions welcomed.
This mashup of all the WILD AI animated iconic memes is worth a watch. 👀
And finally… I enjoy using Threads. But this one core feature really sucks right now. Is it just me? Tell me I’m wrong. 😡

🚨 EVERYONE’S TALKING ABOUT…
Really: how successful is(n’t) X?
The graph above from the FT paints a stark picture of X’s growth under Elon Musk: there really hasn’t been much at all. According to the company’s own figures, it’s only grown 1.6% in daily active users over the past year.
And that’s as Threads grows, and many potential users of X opt to discuss current affairs on TikTok or other social video platforms instead.
As a private company, X doesn’t need to provide the kind of accurate figures Meta does. The company is happy to spin its data in all sorts of ways that make it look better, but as Andrew Hutchinson over at Social Media Today regularly points out, the company’s unusual metrics and sketchy figures make it hard to take anything the company does seriously.
X still seems bullish about the future. It continues to obtain money transmission licences in US states as it edges towards Elon Musk’s vision of an ‘everything app’. And it’s making product moves like a button-free design (just like the inside of a Tesla, it’s not a look that’s right for everyone), while a dislike button for replies looks to be on the horizon, too.
But overall, it seems Musk is learning the hard way something he was told again and again when he bought Twitter: social media is harder than it looks.
His bold prediction of being able to grow X (then called Twitter) to more than 1 billion monthly within 18 months (a prediction he made 20 months ago) seems no more likely than when he made it.
Calling for “criminal prosecution” of people who organise advertising boycotts against X just looks weak. Like with the short sellers he attacks at Tesla, he’s looking to distract attention away from the fact he repeatedly falls far short of his own hype.
