This webinar was so popular, I'm making it available to watch on-demand. Check out the secrets to success for a career in social media, shared by Emplifi and me, plus tips on how to advance your career in social.
🚨 Everyone's talking about...
Just days after Elon Musk was musing over whether he should start his own 'free speech' social platform, it emerged that by then he was already Twitter's largest shareholder. Yes, in the middle of March he took a 9.2% stake in the company.
Musk's stake was initially described as 'passive' when the news broke via an SEC filing this week, but it quickly became anything but passive as CEO Parag Agrawal announced Musk would be joining the company's board.
Agrawal welcomed Musk as a "passionate believer and harsh critic" but employees seemed less happy amid concerns that Musk would push for free speech over moderation. Such a change in priorities could turn Twitter into a wild west of extremism, hate, and spam. It will be interesting to hear how Musk's upcoming AMA with staff goes.
Outside the company, the American Right was happy about the move, seeing it as a sign Twitter might become more welcoming of the kind of people who have had to shuffle off to smaller platforms like Parler in recent times. It remains to be seem if the Agrawal and Musk era of Twitter will see a return for Trump, a move that would be hugely (yugely!) controversial worldwide.
But what if Agrawal's warm welcome to Musk was through gritted teeth? The board seat comes with an agreement that the billionaire will not buy more than 14.9% of company stock. Is this a case of 'keep your friends close but your enemies closer' in a bid to stop him leading a hostile takeover?
If he wanted to, Musk could feasibly take his insights from his time on the board, resign, and then push to buy a controlling stake in the company. 😬
It's finally happening. Days after an apparent April Fool joke about an edit button, it turned out not to be an April Fool at all. A Twitter edit button is finally on the way.
Twitter shared a GIF of the feature that didn't reveal much, so we don't know how it will work, but it will initially be a perk for Twitter Blue subscribers when it launches in testing "in the coming months".
Given the obvious problems an edit button presents in a world where retweets and embeds exist, it's no surprise that Twitter hasn't prioritised the feature until now, as TechCrunch discussed:
In the past, the company has downplayed its interest in giving users the ability to edit tweets, saying that the feature barely ranked on its list of priorities. But 2022 Twitter is a very different beast, one that bears little resemblance to the stagnant social platform of yore — and one that’s no longer led by CEO Jack Dorsey, who faced investor pressure toward the end of his tenure to pick up the company’s pace.
Now the edit button is definitely on the way, even those who have passionately argued against it need to consider how it could work in a way that doesn't make every retweet a risk (will 'I love carrots' be changed to 'I hate carrots' after you retweet it?).
A recent design concept by Simi Akinbode did the rounds this week as a thoughtful way to allow edits without destroying everything that is good about the platform. Let's hope Twitter takes an approach like this. Check it out - if you hate the idea of an edit button, it might just change your mind.
What do you do if your cryptocurrency plans are in tatters? Launch a virtual currency without a blockchain! The Financial Times reported this week that Meta's financial arm is exploring the idea of what has been internally nicknamed 'Zuck Bucks':
Meta is leaning towards introducing in-app tokens that would be centrally controlled by the company, similar to those used in gaming apps such as the robux currency in popular children’s game Roblox...
Meta is also looking into the creation of “social tokens” or “reputation tokens”, which could be issued as rewards for meaningful contributions in Facebook groups, for example. Another effort is to make “creator coins” that might be associated with particular influencers on its photo-sharing app Instagram.
The news comes in the same week we learned that Instagram has cut the payments it makes to creators for Reels. Depending less on cash payouts and more of an 'internal economy' could work out more rewarding for Meta while keeping creators motivated.
And as the FT noted, the 'Facebook Credits' currency accounted for 16% of the company's revenue when it went public in 2012. But the cost of running the Credits system meant it was shut down nine years ago. It seems Meta's ready for another try.
