Hello, geeks!

Oh boy! It’s been quite a week for TikTok in the US…

As its shiny new American joint venture overlords (aka Trump’s pals) took the reins, the app promptly fell apart.

Glitchy videos, broken comments, delayed creator payouts — and users mysteriously blocked from posting anything mentioning ‘Epstein’ or ‘ICE raids'.

Understandably, the conspiracy theory crowd lit up like a Christmas tree.

TikTok US blamed (checks notes)… Oracle. Which, ironically, is one of the new joint venture partners. Ooof! 🤦

Apparently, a “severe weather event” fried one of their data centres. Totally normal launch week stuff. 🤔

More on that hot mess in a moment.

Here’s what else is coming up in this week’s Geekout:

  • Meta testing Snapchat+ style paid subs: Premium perks for Instagram + WhatsApp coming soon

  • Zuckerberg ignoring internal warnings to stop teens accessing AI chatbots that get weirdly sexy

One Viral TikTok Video Can Kill a Brand. Don’t Let It Be Yours

In 2026, one video can tank a brand. Yet most listening tools are blind.

They only track text. They miss what’s actually happening and being in the video.

You’re probably missing:

  • 🗣️ Spoken Mentions: People say your name, but don’t type it.

  • 🔗 Untagged Endorsements: Creators push your product without tagging.

  • 😱 Negative PR: By the time it hits Slack, it’s too late.

That’s where Syncly Social comes in.

It’s built specifically for social video, not retrofitted from legacy text-based listening.

Why Syncly puts you back in control:

  • 🤖 True video listening: Monitor your brand on TikTok/IG/YouTube, even on untagged posts

  • 🔍 Influencer discovery: Find creators who fit with your brand by analyzing what they  actually show and say

  • 🗂️ Competitive intel: Decode who and what’s driving growth for your competitors

Get a FREE Social Video Audit!
Syncly will unearth videos creators have shared mentioning your brand (or your rivals)

Syncly will then create a FREE TikTok-ready video strategy just for you, to boost reach, clicks, and clout.

I just got mine, and it was full of smart ideas — 🔥 Get your FREE Social Video Audit.

This One Channel Boosted Facebook Performance 20% 📈

Facebook ads flatlining? TikTok results still unpredictable? 🫠

So what are the smartest social teams doing about it?

They’re adding TV. And no, not Mad Men-era TV.

We’re talking modern, testable, performance-driven TV that works like Meta used to.

Fabletics plugged Tatari into their media mix and saw:

  • 📉 CPMs drop 50%

  • 📈 Facebook ROAS shoot up 20%

TV builds top-of-funnel demand.
Then social + search convert it more efficiently.
Everything works harder.

And no, you don’t need a Super Bowl sized ad budget!

This is TV built for performance marketers:

  • Test fast

  • Track CPV, ROAS, CAC

  • Scale only what works

Tatari helps growth teams plan, buy, and measure streaming and linear TV with the same mindset you use for paid social.

So, if your Facebook performance is flatlining, this might be your unlock.

TikTok US’s rocky first week

As the deal to create a separate entity to run TikTok in the USA was finally signed off late last week, there were celebrations at the company’s American HQ. But they didn’t last long.

Let’s set aside the question of whether or not the deal is even legal. As Adam Presser, previously TikTok’s head of operations, was appointed CEO of TikTok US and the weekend rolled around, the platform was in for a nightmare few days that would have staff and users alike worried.

There were severe tech problems lasting the best part of three days. TikTok US blamed them on a data centre power problem, which turned out to be caused by the new co-owner of TikTok US, Oracle. Embarrassing!

TikTok warned advertisers the failure caused missing ads, broken reporting, and monetisation glitches. Major agencies saw severe under-delivery, forcing brands to shift spend, which spiked CPMs on Meta and YouTube. Some campaigns auto-ended early, worsening performance. Yikes.

A few technical issues are to be expected after a major change, perhaps. But there was more.

Long before the deal closed, there had been concerns that a bunch of Trump-approved rich folk taking over TikTok’s algorithm in the US could tighten Trump’s cultural grip on the app, and the country for widely.

In the first few days of TikTok US, those fears seemed to have been made real, with users reporting censorship of posts about ICE and Epstein. TikTok said this was not intentional, but that didn’t stop California governor Gavin Newsom accusing TikTok of suppressing content critical of Trump. He pledged to investigate.

Whether or not TikTok suppresses anti-Trump content, the fear that it might is completely justified in a country where the President sues media outlets he thinks are unfair to him.

I suspect TikTok US will find itself having to justify every pro-Trump moderation decision to users in the future.

Meanwhile, TikTok users freaked out over app’s ‘immigration status’ collection.

It turns out that’s some legal box-ticking the previous version of the app also had. But in the context of ICE roaming around the US and rounding people up, it’s understandable that users were worried. It’s also understandable that advertisers might worry that these policies could put users off the app.

Competing apps like UpScrolled and Skylight, which saw a boost this week in the US, will no doubt be hoping TikTok’s new American owners screw up spectacularly. They certainly have so far…
