Hello, geeks!
I'm back from my summer break. And boy, did I need it. A very random seven days offline.
First, I took my Gen-Z daughter to see Bruno Mars at Wembley.
One of the best live performances I've ever seen. Genuinely awesome.
Then I went to… Torquay.
For those unfamiliar with British seaside resorts, Torquay bills itself as "The English Riviera."
A claim likely written by someone who has never visited the French Riviera. Or Torquay. 😆
We were there to watch British "psychological illusionist" Derren Brown.
I spent the whole night, like everyone around me, trying to work out how TF he got a woman to scribble objects on a card that was behind her back, which later matched up perfectly to objects in a random photo from an audience member's phone.
I’m still none the wiser. And mildly concerned that he now knows my credit card PIN.

Meta Gifted Me Its £600 AI “Pervert” Smart Glasses

This morning, a gift from Meta landed on my doormat: the latest Ray-Ban AI smartglasses (Blayzer Optics), with my prescription transition lenses fitted for work, driving and out in the sun.
The plan: wear them every day for two weeks and decide if they're genuinely useful AI hardware, or just the £600 "pervert" specs the media's branding them.
Testing may be harder than expected….
One day in, a shop assistant has already asked "are those recording?" and told me to take them off. So that's the vibe check done!
Less "Iron Man," more "sir, please leave the premises."
Still, credit to Meta's PR team. I routinely mock Zuckerberg and blast Meta's shadier behaviour, yet they've sent these with no demands over what I say.
Either they're very confident in the product, or nobody involved has ever read Geekout.
Brave? Risky? We'll find out. Brutally honest review landing here in a few weeks.
Alrighty then. What did we miss whilst I was away?
Judging by the time it took to pull this week’s Geekout together — a lot!
Let’s get into it.
— Matt

Some Reddit mods REALLY don’t like AI moderation
Reddit’s community of moderators is a big part of what makes the platform so valuable.
In most cases, people who understand the topic their subreddit is focused on work to carefully nurture the right kind of vibe in which valuable discussion can thrive.
But the company has sometimes had a rough relationship with moderators. If mods don’t like something the leadership does, they have a history of fighting back.
Could we be heading towards another such battle between mods and execs? Reddit has announced it is expanding the use of AI in some moderation workflows.
As Mashable reports, some mods aren’t happy that the new LLM-based Rules Hub could replace Automod, a bot that helps moderators automate things like blocking keywords and removing spam.
Quotes like "PLEASE stop 'fixing' things that don't need to be fixed” and “I don't think you're hearing your moderators… They’re telling you DO NOT SUNSET automod. Period” will look familiar to anyone familiar with Reddit’s leadership/mod drama over the years.
Reddit’s leadership says Automod won’t be replaced until Rules Hub is good enough, but the friction here is an example of how most everyday people are far more resistant to AI taking over everything than Silicon Valley techbros are.
Sometimes people don’t want to be forced to use something ‘smarter’, they just need something that works reliably.
Reddit is going to have to play it VERY carefully here, lest it end up with yet another protest that sees moderators showing just how powerful they can be.

OpenAI’s first luxury influencer trip has triggered a backlash 😬
Influencers stayed in $1,500–$3,100-a-night rooms, with wellness sessions and ChatGPT workshops
Guests received private cabins, monogrammed pyjamas, gourmet dinners and branded honey
Comments online quickly turned to data-centre water use, environmental costs, and creators “selling out”
The negative response was easy to predict. ‘AI giving people the ick’ is a real force online.
If OpenAI wanted to woo creators and show them how to use its latest tools, it should probably have told them it was a private event not for talking about directly!

Also viral this week:
TikTok videos are telling people to put their phones in the fridge. Don't do it!

How much do brands pay to partner with MrBeast? We’ve found out thanks to newly filed court documents…

T-Mobile appears to have paid $15 million for four video promotions
Amazon seems to have committed $12.5 million for 5 main-channel ads
Walmart was offered an $8 million to $10 million video about buying everything in a Supercenter
A 30 to 45-second YouTube integration cost around $2.5 million in 2024.
Adding a Short cost another $500,000. Website branding could reach $1 million monthly.
Pitches to Slack, Sony and Walmart sold scale, spectacle, and access to young audiences abandoning TV
__________
More brand news and views:
AI slop is fooling advertisers' verification tools, meaning brands are paying premium prices for AI slop
Brands are moving past influencers and towards creators with actual authority. They are increasingly treating creators as media companies, not rented reach

Early social media use has been linked to lower grades years later, a study has found.

Those joining at 11–12 scored lower in maths and Italian than pupils waiting until at least 14.
By age 16, the gap was equivalent to roughly 6 months of learning.
The authors of the study favour delaying access to social media for kids, describing outright bans as an emergency measure.

He said there is a “hot debate” about shorts inside Instagram’s office.
Mosseri himself is firmly pro-shorts, though he says “not everyone can pull them off.”

TikTok's raunchy experiment with a dating feature is over! 😵
The feature dropped singles into multi-guest chats inside TikTok’s “hangout” section
Some rooms offered flirting. Others served explicit gimmicks and very little actual dating
The test reached selected users in the US and other markets before TikTok paused it
The experiment looked less like Tinder, more like Omegle wearing a TikTok Live badge… but now it’s dead.
__________
Also new to the graveyard:
Old Reddit could become collateral damage in Reddit’s war on AI scraping

TikTok had a horrific, and deeply upsetting issue to deal with this week.
It says a “moderator error” left a livestream up in which gossip blogger Perez Hilton self-harmed.
Automated systems reportedly flagged it within minutes, but removal was delayed.
TikTok says the stream lasted around 15 minutes, not the 30 widely claimed.
The platform alerted police, removed later streams within 90 seconds and banned the account.
Screen recordings later spread across X and Instagram.
What use is instant AI detection if one human error leaves graphic harm live?

Instagram has shared the editing secrets behind viral Reels.
Start with the hook, then cut anything slowing the opening seconds.
Edit to the audio, using beat markers to make transitions feel intentional.
Use captions and visuals to reinforce the message, not clutter the screen.
Then study watch time, skips, saves and shares to sharpen the next edit.
Instagram says creators often spend disproportionate time refining the opening frames.

WATCHING: 81% of US Instagram users watch Reels, but only 39% upload one

TikTok views average just $1.40 per 1,000
YouTube views cost around $6.70
Fake followers typically run $14–$20 per 1,000, except YouTube at a hefty $78
Comments cost far more: $93 per 1,000 on YouTube but $287 on Facebook
TikTok shares average $68 per 1,000, versus just $17 on YouTube
Likes cost around $10–$25 per 1,000 across platforms
