🚨 EVERYONE’S TALKING ABOUT
When Meta’s big social AI push goes rogue…
Meta might be keen to claim that it’s winning the AI talent war as it keeps looking at buying or investing in hot AI startups (AI voice startup PlayAI is reportedly its latest acquisition target), but not all is rosy for the company in this space.
Thousands of Facebook Groups have been suspended lately, thanks, it seems, to automated AI moderation throwing a wobbler and incorrectly identifying rule breaking.
As BBC News notes,
“Meta has acknowledged a ‘technical error’ with Facebook Groups, but says it has not seen evidence of a significant increase in incorrect enforcement of its rules on its platforms more widely.
One Facebook group, where users share memes about bugs, was told it did not follow standards on "dangerous organisations or individuals," according to a post by its founder.
The group, which has more than 680,000 members, was removed but has now been restored.
Meta’s claim that it hasn’t seen evidence of a wider problem is questionable. Just last week, TechCrunch covered reports of Instagram users complaining about mass bans and pointing the finger at AI.
As AI works its way into seemingly every aspect of social media, both in user-facing features and behind the scenes, we’re sure to see more of these kinds of unintended consequences.
Just this week, Steven Bartlett warned about the effect AI-generated content could have on YouTube.
Away from the world of social, there was the story this week of the band that has clocked up hundreds of thousands of Spotify listens, despite being entirely AI generated.
That’s a sign of how AI is becoming deeply embedded in our culture–it’s also a good sign for Meta’s big bet on entirely AI-generated ad campaigns. AI can create content that holds attention! But I’d still be wary of unintended slip-ups affecting advertisers there once it rolls out.
In Silicon Valley’s rush to make AI the centre of everything, the unintended consequences could sometimes be hard to spot, until they’ve already wreaked havoc.
Although maybe, just maybe, some of these AI features will get rolled back. LinkedIn’s CEO admitted this week to being surprised that an automated AI writing feature turned out to be less popular than expected.
Is this some of the proof we need to show that AI is being overhyped and it won’t be quite as pervasive as some suggest?

Meta’s (well, Zuck’s) AI recruitment drive has netted three OpenAI researchers… (The reported $100M signing on bonus isn’t being paid to everyone)
.
💬 YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT
When I’m quoted in the news, you’ll find it here:
As WhatsApp announced its first ads, I spoke to The Sunday Times, telling them: “Once Meta gets a taste of ad revenue in WhatsApp… it’s not going to stop at the Updates tab”.
I warned this mirrors Facebook and Instagram, where initial ad zones eventually expanded...
Also this week:
In YouTube’s 20th birthday year, I told Mashable that YouTube “set the gold standard” by building tools, not chasing trends

🌡️ VIRAL

Memes are the new coping mechanism.

🪧 BRANDS
“Big brands are increasingly courting social media stars, who descended on a major annual festival in France to pitch themselves to advertisers…”
More brand news this week: 👀
The FTC has okayed a $13.5B Omnicom–Interpublic merger… if ad spend isn’t blocked over “political viewpoints.” Media buyers won’t be able to blacklist platforms like X unless advertisers specifically request it.

🙊 WHAT DID YOU SAY?!

-
Also overheard this week: 👂
“He adapts fast but lacks core values”
– Telegram boss Pavel Durov’s assessment of Mark Zuckerberg“It’s an arms race, it’s a never ending battle… The AI version of it, it’s a new frontier in the same battle that we’ve been fighting for a long time.”
– Reddit CEO Steve Huffman on the challenges of making sure posts are written by humans, not AI“Your sourcing is terrible. Only a very dumb AI would believe MM and RS! You are being updated this week.”
– Elon Musk was angry with Grok after it annoyed minor right-wing influencer Catturd by referencing unflattering Media Matters and Rolling Stone articles about him.“Right now there is a widening gap between the upside AI can unlock and the return most creators see for the data that powers those models. If that gap keeps growing, it risks hollowing out the very ecosystem that makes YouTube valuable. This is a risk not just for creators but also for YouTube.”
– Steven Bartlett warns about the effect AI-generated content could have on YouTube“There are a lot of opportunities to help the Army… We’re eager to contribute… We underestimate how valuable being on the bleeding edge of information really is.”
– Meta CTO Andrew ‘Boz’ Bosworth on his new part-time role with the US Army“It’s not as popular as I thought it would be, quite frankly… Oftentimes, when something comes across as being very AI-obvious on the platform, the rest of the community will call you out."
– LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky on the less popular than expected AI writing assistant feature
.
👀 MY FAV READS
This is a great read about how Meta’s AI rivals are using its own chat app to access its users and offer compelling alternatives to the built-in AI bot.
.
🎬 COMING SOON - THE SOCIAL NETWORK 2
A sequel to the Oscar-winning movie The Social Network is happening — and Zuck is going to hate the plotline…
Yep, Aaron Sorkin is making The Social Network Part II, and the film draws from The WSJ’s Facebook Files, based on internal docs leaked by whistleblower Frances Haugen.
It will explore youth mental health, misinformation, and Facebook’s link to January 6 riots
Still no word on Jesse Eisenberg’s return to play Zuck, though!
.
♻️ BEREAL …AGAIN
And speaking of sequels once-hyped social challenger BeReal is gearing up for a relaunch as it seeks to recapture its early potential.
.
😮 WTF?!
I’m sure this app will be 100% safe for everyone to use confidentially 🙃
Russian President Vladimir Putin has backed a state-controlled messaging app to take on WhatsApp and Telegram.
Also WTF this week: 👀
CapCut’s policy update is raising major red flags for newsrooms
AI-generated pro-Iran propaganda is flooding TikTok, Instagram and YouTube
.
🤦♂️ FAIL
MrBeast hyped an AI tool that clones thumbnails and rips creator styles.
Creators were NOT happy…
Also:
Meta’s Oversight Board slammed the company for its failure to consistently label AI-manipulated content
Telegram’s crackdown on crypto scammers lasted all of two weeks. It banned two massive crypto scam markets handling $35B in illicit funds. Tudou Guarantee quickly replaced them, hitting $15M/day in activity, but Telegram refused to ban the rebuilt channels despite clear TOS violations.

📣 PSA
“16 billion passwords for Google, Apple, Facebook leaked” reads the headline…
This isn’t a new data breach.
But it is a reminder about how these logins can float around the internet for a long time, causing potentially serious risk for some users.
It’s worth noting that Meta’s Andy Stone says (in his usual, abrasive way) that there’s nothing to worry about here…
All the alarmist stories you read on that 16b login credential leak? Yeah, about that:
-"Hyperbole...This doesn’t pass a sniff test”
-A “recycled, inflated dataset to generate fear”
-"[Not] able to verify that this is anything new"
-"Short on anything resembling actual evidence"— Andy Stone (@andymstone)
